Augustine and Martin Luther were both influential figures in the history of Christianity. Augustine, a theologian and philosopher from the 4th and 5th centuries, is known for his emphasis on the concept of original sin and his development of the doctrine of predestination. Martin Luther, a 16th-century monk and theologian, is best known for his role in the Protestant Reformation and his rejection of certain teachings and practices of the Catholic Church, such as the selling of indulgences. Both Augustine and Luther were deeply concerned with the nature of sin and salvation, and both had a significant impact on the development of Christian theology. However, they also had differences in their theological perspectives, particularly on the issue of free will and predestination. Augustine emphasized the sovereignty of God and the depravity of humanity, while Luther focused on the idea of salvation by grace through faith alone. Higher goods are those that are eternal and unchanging, such as God and the soul, while lower goods are temporary and subject to change, such as material possessions and physical pleasures.
